e.l.f. Studio Corrective Concealer

A concealer is very important piece in an intermediate makeup enthusiast's kit because we all know that no matter how much we put on our face, we still aren't fully satisfied with how we look. An expert on the other hand has tested a lot of products, both skin care and cosmetics, and know which ones work and which ones don't, and therefore could truly make a look that is perfect in their standards. As for the newbies, well... I think they're pretty much happy with pressed powders and lippies (like I did all this time).

There will always be parts of our faces that causes insecurities. There'll always be something we want to change or hide. This, I think, is the reason why concealer is born. (I mean, why else would a concealer be born?) But using a concealer isn't as easy as swiping it on. There are rules or guidelines that should be followed.

For one, finding the right shade is critical. Then you should have the right consistency and tool for the specific blemish you have to hide. I won't be going into details as I think that would be too long or too lecture-y. I'll probably make a different post about it.

Aside from the typical concealer, a new breed of concealer has sprouted, the corrective concealer. This is said to correct discolorations, or blemishes with a specific color, and neutralize it. It's like adding (+)1 and (-)1. The sum would be 0. Okay, lecture-y! Moving on.

" Use the nude and beige shades to conceal problematic areas. Use the green shade to neutralize redness like that of acne and the lilac shade to brighten dull yellow tones."
That's what it says on the box. ;)

Review

The e.l.f. Studio Correcting Concealer comes in a palette of four colors. Beige, green, lilac and nude. It comes with a small brush and two clear acetates (plastic) that could be used for mixing colors should the need arise. Sadly, that skill has yet to be learned for me. lol. The product has a slightly creamy consistency that makes it a little hard to put on. It's either I'm not using enough or too much. And the brush isn't helping. It looks like I've been clawing on my concealer when I was only trying to swipe to get some product on to it. My finger on the other hand could pick up a good quantity of product (or maybe the heat of my skin helps) but it has always been too large for the areas I want to conceal.

Here are the swatches. The nude disappears into my skin and beige can barely be seen. But the face is whiter than the hand, and they said that concealers should be about one or two shades lighter. So I could probably use beige as my face's nude, and the nude would have no purpose. I am loving the green and lilac though, especially the lilac. Could I use them as eyeshadow, do you think? lol.

They look powdery here, as I said they were only slightly creamy. The pans have some beads of perspiration of oil, so... I don't know what to make of that.

This small palette comes in a black plastic packaging with a small peekaboo glass window so you can see what colors you will get. Might help with choosing the right color, but maybe not, since it's still better to test them out first yourself.

This is priced at P249.75 and can be found at SM department stores.

Verdict

I'm not sure if I'll buy these again. I think I'm better off with a liquid concealer, or one that comes in a twist-up tube for convenience. I still have a lot to try and test in regard with concealers, so I'm sure this will be a long journey.

I might probably keep this one if I find a better way of applying it. :)

Anyway, I would love to hear your suggestions. Or some tips and tricks you can share. :) Thanks everyone!

Dawn

  1. Just bought this too earlier. :) I was looking for the green concealer for my redness. I was opting for the naturactor as I have read good reviews about it. But it's so pricey for me so I opted for this corrective concealer by elf. I like that it has a salmon like color and the lilac. Would try this and make a review.

    1. :D I'm glad you liked it. I love elf cosmetics because they're really inexpensive. :D If only it's available there, I think you'll be trying a lot of them out. :D

    2. Right. I don't like looking at ones in our "malls" here as they might just be the class A ones and not authentic ones. I don't know about ones in Health and Beauty if they are authentic but there aren't much to choose from unlike in SM where you get a variety.

    3. That's true. And it's not as fun because there's only a few counters. Unlike in SM where there's lots of boutiques dedicated only to makeup and even in the department store there's like a whole floor. lol. Wahh come here, I wanna go shopping with you. :D
